Piedmont Retreat

The Piedmont Retreat is a project rooted in sustainability, engagement with the land, and a contextual response to its proposed site in central Virginia. The programming study resulted in a series of minimally detailed cabin structures connected by meandering paths. These paths lead to shared outbuildings and landscape follies—including a primitive sauna with cold plunge, sound bath, flexible gathering space, lookout tower, and areas for yoga and meditation—anchored by a modest caretaker’s structure. The palette is intentionally spartan, encouraging visitors to unplug from technology, reduce unnecessary stimulation, and deepen their connection to the natural environment and sense of place.
