Lanexa River House

Set along the Chickahominy River in Lanexa, Virginia, this conceptual renovation and addition reimagines a 1986 residence on a dramatic 1.64-acre site. Our studies focused on preserving the character and natural forms of the existing home while creating a more refined, functional environment for a family of five.

The existing house had limited windows and a collection of fussy exterior forms that competed with its idyllic surroundings. We streamlined the architecture and introduced an expansive new dormer, bringing significantly more natural light into the interior while opening views toward the river. Proposed vertical wood cladding and EIFS reinforce the home's modern character.

Inside, we studied a more contemporary layout and material palette, including a dual-sided fireplace anchoring the kitchen and living spaces and a long horizontal window serving as the kitchen backsplash. Additional renovations included a home gym, garage improvements, a downstairs guest suite, and an expanded rear deck with a covered outdoor kitchen.

Landscape studies extended the design into the site, exploring native plantings, a river-stone driveway with weathered steel edging, and the feasibility of a reclaimed shipping-container pool.
